Newspapers and Periodicals

The Carlisle Indian School published a variety of weekly and monthly magazines and newspapers. Although primarily written and published by Native American students as part of their industrial training, the publications were heavily censored by the school’s administration, and were sent all over the country. Each issue of the monthly magazines espoused some philosophical article pertaining to the school experience.  The weekly publications typically held news items for events at the school and of students who participated. Also included in these was news of former students chronicling their lives as reported in their letters back to”Dear Old Carlisle.” Over the years these papers changed names and formats. Below is a list of names of the publications and dates they were published. CCHS has a near complete collection of these publications, preserved in their original format, on microfilm, and in digital format.

Some of these collections can be accessed online at the Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center which also includes copies from the collections at Dickinson College, Yale University Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, and the National Archives and Records Administration.
