Long, Sylvester

Sylvester Long arrived at the Carlisle Indian School on August 28, 1909 and would graduate from the school in 1912 but would leave the school only sometime in 1913.  The schools follow up report shows that he went to Saint John’s Military Academy and graduated in 1915.  Would write a letter to President Wilson requesting a Presidential appointment to West Point to which Wilson would but Long didn’t go.  Instead he would serve as a Lieutenant in Princess “Pat’s” Regiment fighting in WWI at which he ended up wounded in France in 1917.  He went on to become the famous Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance, his career peaking with the publication of his autobiography of that name.  Long was cast in the hero’s role in the movie The Silent Enemy, opposite Chauncey Yellow Robe.
