Lucy Pretty Eagle, a Sioux from the Brule tribe, which, is located in the modern day state of South Dakota. Like all the other Indian children that were apart of the first group of students to come to the Carlisle Indian School choose a Anglican names, she had chosen the name Lucy. Though her last name of Pretty Eagle is not her own but that of her dads name, Lucy’s Sioux name when translated means Take the Tail. Lucy Pretty Eagle would die four months after coming to the Carlisle Indian School. She would be the first to be buried at the Carlisle Indian School cemetery.
