Miller – Humming Bird in Full Native American Dress

Humming Bird, a Winnebago Chieftain and ex-Carlisle Indian School Student in full Native American dress.

This photo may be explained by an article that appeared in the Carlisle Evening Sentinel on Friday, April 8, 1910. The Central Pennsylvania Section of State Photographers were guests on Thursday of Gustave Hensel, photographer on West High Street. Among those present were a number of photographers as well as Mr. and Mrs. Dietz of the Carlisle Indian School, who were in charge of the art department at the school. “In the afternoon there were interesting demonstrations under the skylight, one of the subjects for photographing being an Indian in full Indian regalia.”

This photo also appears in Chief Winnechiek’s album. This man is a Winnebago Chieftain named “Humming Bird.” He was an ex-Carlisle student, lecturer and musician.
