Three Young Pueblo Men – After

Three Pueblo Indian young men: left to right, (Native Name/English Name): Watte/Sheldon Jackson; He-ri-te/Harvey Townsend; Keise-te-wa/John Shields.

Sheldon Jackson was age 20 when he arrived in 1880. His step-father was Jose Ignacio Valencia. He left the school Sept. 18. 1883.

Harvey Townsend was age 8 when he arrived in 1880. He left the school on November 20, 1883. He re-enrolled on February 2, 1884. He studied carpentry and went on five outings during his second enrollment. He left the school on July 6, 1888 and was at the San Felipe reservation in 1910.

John Shields was an adopted son of Theodocle Duran (Governor) at San Felipe. He arrived at Carlisle in 1880 at the age of 18. He went on five outings. He left the school on September 18, 1883. He married Maria Mostae Valencia, was a farmer and stock raiser (cattle and horses) and lived in an adobe house. He was twice governor of Pueblo. San Felipe. He later lived in Algondones, New Mexico.
